You know how sometimes you get a revelation and you say to yourself, “Why didn’t I think of this sooner?”
Or those times when you find something that makes your life significantly easier, saves you a boat load of hassle, and makes you want to smash your head into your palm for not noticing it earlier?
Let me demonstrate why this happens to just about everyone.
There were major communication barriers in my family as I was growing up. A lot of people talking just to talk and an equally shocking amount of people ignoring any incoming verbiage. Naturally, this made for a whole slew of problems and made me cringe to have to deal with this on a daily basis. It was like trying to make my way through a dense jungle while being slowed down by mud and lethal creatures from the rain forest.
Luckily, through my several-year quest to become a better communicator, I’m finally able to start weaving through the jungle and rain forest combo. I specifically remember the first time I was able to effectively communicate with my family after returning from several years of development. I said to myself, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”
Through various findings and mentors, it is evident that these moments occur quite frequently simply because life events and revelations occur when we are ready for them. As we live and learn, we accumulate experiences and sensations that culminate within our understanding of the world. We make breakthrough innovations and understandings when we have accumulated enough understanding.
Imagine a water balloon that is filled by a pump very slowly. At first it stretches the balloon and seems difficult to fill, then the balloon eases up and water flows in easier. As the balloon gets closer to max capacity and becomes more resistant to the pump once more, the next event to follow is the burst. The balloon explodes, reaching its capacity, and water bursts out.
The pump and water is your experience in life, and the balloon is the barrier of true understanding. When you finally reach that point of revelation and experience that life changing moment, you are finally ready to absorb the learning. If you chuck a half-filled balloon, it won’t burst effectively. We are not meant to have these life altering moments any sooner because we are not yet prepared for them.
The next time you have that face-palm moment and you catch yourself thinking, “Why didn’t I think of this sooner?” Add to your thoughts, “But I sure am glad I am thinking of this now and from here on out.”
